Flammable insulation material is banned from being used on residential buildings over 18mtrs. However, there is currently no ban in place for buildings shorter than this. Use of combustible material is widespread in buildings of this height. In addition, it is common to find insufficient fire breaks within cavity walls of these buildings. Thousands of buildings, (1000 in London alone), have abandoned ‘stay put’ policies and have opted for a full evacuation of residents instead. However, many of these buildings were built with a single staircase, meaning there is no alternative evacuation route or means of escape in the event of a fire.
